*Title:* *Can we predict an epileptic seizure? *(La charla será dada en
español salvo que los presentes la prefieran en inglés)
*Author:* Hilda A. Cerdeira
*Affiliation:* Instituto de Física Teórica (IFT - UNESP), São Paulo, Brazil

*Abstract:* There are over 60 million people with epilepsy today. These
numbers tend to grow as the population gets older. Two-thirds of the
patients have their seizures controlled either by drugs or surgery.
However, a vast number of people still have unexpected seizures, which
limits their daily lives due to the possible consequences. For these
patients, new therapeutic strategies are needed. A solution that warns them
when a seizure is about to come would increase their quality of life
immensely. We have developed a solution through an algorithm based in
non-linear dynamical systems theory that runs over electroencephalogram
(EEG) data collected from only two electrodes. It runs in real time, that
is, at the same time it collects data from the patient. This software was
tested in a vast set of EEG signals from renown databases: MIT and
Epilepsiae. As a result we had 93% of true positives and 21% of false

*About the author *[see http://www.hcerdeira.info/]*: *Hilda A. Cerdeira
was born in Argentina. She graduated as Licenciada en Fisica at the
Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires. She holds a Ph.D. in Physics from
Brown University. She held postdoctoral positions at Max Planck Institut
for Festkkoerperforschung and Mettallforschung. She was professor at the
University of Campinas, Brazil, before moving to Italy.

She was a Scientific Member of the Condensed Matter Group of the Abdus
Salam ICTP Theoretical Physics and also the Head of the Donation Programme
of the Abdus Salam International Centre FOR Theoretical Physics. For a
number of years she shared the chairmanship of the Adriatico Research
Conferences with Professor Stig Lundqvist. She has edited a number of
conference Proceedings. She works in nonlinear dynamical systems, in
particular in synchronization of chaotic systems, where her work on
decoding signals masked in low dimensional chaotic signals is one of the
milestones of the field. She was a member of the Editorial Board of the
International Journal for Bifurcation and Chaos, the World Scientific
Series on Lectures in Complex Systems and Learned Publishing. She was a
member of the IUPAP working group on Communications in Physics, a
Member-at-Large of the Governing Board of the American Institute of Physics
and a member of the Advisory Board of Physics Today. In International
issues, she developed the eJournals Delivery Service, which is a service
for researchers in institutions in Third World Countries, where low
bandwidth Internet facilities or lack of funds do not allow downloading of
scientific material in a timely manner. The service allows access to over
300 of the highest impact journals in Physics and Mathematics.

At present she is a Retired Professor, at the Instituto de Física Teórica,
UNESP, São Paulo, Brazil, where she dedicates most of her time to do
Research at Leisure, dedicating a large part of her time to search for
signals of coming seizures in electroencephalograms of epileptic patients.
