Roy Adler (1931-2016)
Monday August 1st 2016
Adler, who spent his career at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research
Center, died July 26 at the age of 85. He, Allan Konheim, and M.H.
McAndrew were first to define the term topological entropy, a measure
of the complexity of a dynamical system. Adler received his PhD from
Yale University in 1961 under the direction of Shizuo Kakutani and was
a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the New York
Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the inaugural class of
Fellows of the AMS. In 1985 a paper he co-authored with Don
Coppersmith and Martin Hassner, "Algorithms for Sliding Block
Codes--An Application of Symbolic Dynamics to Information Theory"
(IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, Jan. 1983), won the IEEE Information
Theory Group Paper Award. Adler was an AMS member since 1957. Read
more about his life in this obituary from The New York Times.
