Subject: [IMU AO CL 5/2016] Call for nominations to the Nominating
Committee of IMU
To: ao en mathunion.org
To: The Adhering Organizations of the International Mathematical Union
This email marks the beginning of the preparations of the next meeting of
the IMU General Assembly (GA) to be held in São Paulo, Brazil on July
The IMU Executive Committee has started forming the Nominating Committee
(NC), whose task it is to present slates of nominations to the Adhering
Organizations (AOs) prior to the GA meeting in São Paulo. Every AO is
requested to nominate one person for this Nominating Committee.
The NC is one of the most important IMU committees since it has a strong
influence on the composition of the IMU leadership for the term 2019–2022.
The role of the Nominating Committee is described in detail at:
A brief review of the duties of the NC can be found below.
The composition of the NC is as follows:
(a) The President of IMU.
(b) The Chair (chosen by the IMU President).
(c) Three other persons (chosen at random from AO nominations).
(d) Two persons with experience of IMU (chosen jointly by the NC Chair and
the IMU President).
This call for nominations concerns the three persons mentioned under item
The IMU Executive Committee asks for the nomination of persons
‒ who are not current members of the IMU Executive Committee,
‒ who are willing to serve, and
‒ who do not work in the same country as the NC Chair or the IMU President.
The IMU President Shigefumi Mori has chosen Martin Grötschel (IMU Secretary
2007–2014) as the Chair of the NC. In particular, this implies that no
person working in Japan or in Germany can be nominated.
One person is to be chosen from nominations submitted by Groups I and II,
one person chosen from nominations submitted by Groups III and IV and one
person chosen from nominations submitted by Group V. Each Adhering
Organization may submit one name of a person who is willing to serve. If
there are no nominations in one of these three categories, then a person
will be chosen at random from the other two categories.
All submissions are to be sent via email, post, or fax to IMU at the
address: International Mathematical Union, Markgrafenstr. 32, 10117 Berlin,
Germany (Fax: +49 30 20372-439). All email submissions must be sent from
the official email address of the Adhering Organization to the IMU
Secretary at <secretary en mathunion.org>.
‒ Every nomination of a candidate has to be accompanied by a statement of
the candidate that he or she is willing to serve.
‒ No member of the Nominating Committee will be eligible to hold an office
for 2019-2022 on the IMU EC, CDC or ICHM.
The deadline for receipt of nominations from which a random selection will
be made, is August 1, 2016.
The Nominating Committee is scheduled to be complete by October 1, 2016,
and according to the tradition, the AOs will be informed about its
composition at that time.
Prof. Helge Holden
Secretary of the International Mathematical Union
Duties of the IMU Nominating Committee
(a) Nomination slates will be formed for the IMU Executive Committee (EC),
IMU Commission for Developing Countries (CDC), and the International
Commission on the History of Mathematics (ICHM).
(b) The slates for the commissions will be formed taking advice from the
current officers of these commissions, but this advice is not binding on
the IMU Nominating Committee.
(c) The IMU Nominating Committee will nominate one name for the position of
President of IMU, Secretary of IMU, President of CDC, and Secretaries of
CDC and one name for each of the two Vice Presidents of IMU.
The IMU Nominating Committee will nominate at least two more names than the
number of Members-at-Large of IMU and CDC, and for the ICHM representatives.
