MANDELBROT DIES AT EIGHTY-FIVE
Benoit Mandelbrot, who coined the term fractal for a class of mathematical
shapes whose uneven contours could mimic the irregularities found in nature,
died on Thursday, October 14, at the age of eighty-five. He spent 32 years
at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center before joining the faculty at Yale
University, where he was the Sterling Professor of Mathematical Sciences
until his retirement. Among his awards are the Wolf Prize (1993) and the
