VI Simpósio de Ecologia, Genética e Evolução de Drosophila

Dentre as Mesas Redondas, se propõe, pela primeira vez, uma específica
para Doutorandos em fase final de curso. Esta Mesa tem por objetivo a
apresentação prévia de seus resultados, permitindo aos demais
participantes uma visão, mesmo que geral, do que está sendo produzido
nos diversos laboratórios, vinculados a diferentes cursos de
Pós-Graduação do Brasil.
A apresentação de resultados de pesquisa será feita na forma de Painéis,
para os quais estão reservadas cinco horas na programação.

CURSO EN EL EXTERIOR
"Advanced Insect Developmental Genetics and Genomics"
LUGAR: Santiago de Chile
FECHA: Del 2 al 12 de diciembre 2009.
Se otorgarán becas a estudiantes extranjeros.
DESCRIPCIÓN:
This lecture and laboratory course will expose students to
recent advances and
modern techniques in functional genetics, bioinformatics, and genomics. The core of the
course will be centered on the use of Drosophila melanogaster, but will also include the
analysis of other
insect genomes as well as the evolution of regulatory gene networks.
The recent sequencing and analyses of genomes of other insects coupled with the ability
to examine gene expression in situ and through microarray
analyses offers unique
opportunities to expose students to
these new, exploding areas of biology. The course
will provide a unique opportunity for Latin American students to
learn first-hand how
research is conducted in these areas. We expect to attract
students interested in
developmental genetics, evolution, genomics, and bioinformatics.
The course will consist of an introductory overview followed
by lectures and
laboratory work. The labs will consist of exercises aimed at gaining hands-on experience
in the various methods discussed in class.
The basic expenses, course materials, travel and lodging of non-Chilean students
will be covered by the Course, which
is funded primarily by Millennium Nucleus Center
for Genomics of the Cell, AMSUD Pasteur and The Company of Biologists.
APPLICATION:
Advanced undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral
fellows
from academic institutions based in Latin America may apply for a space in this course.
Ten students from Chile and five from Latin America will be selected.

words) stating
current research interests and reasons why this course would
be beneficial for the
candidate's career and a letter of recommendation from the
scientific advisor or
professor.

*Molecular and Cellular Biology at Ohio University
Ohio University offers interdisciplinary graduate study in molecular and
cell biology through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Molecular
and Cellular Biology. The Departments of Biological Sciences, Biomedical
Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Environmental and Plant
Biology contribute dynamic faculty and access to world-class research
facilities to provide students with the broadest scientific educational
opportunities.
The program offers the Ph.D. in a broad range of areas in molecular and
cellular biology catered to student and faculty interests. M.S degrees
with a concentration in molecular and cellular biology are available in
the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and
Environmental and Plant Biology. MCB graduate students are eligible to
earn a graduate certificate in Bioinformatics during their study at Ohio
University. A core curriculum has been developed with course offerings
in the MCB, Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Plant
Biology, and Computer Science.
*Biomedical Engineering at Ohio University
Biomedical engineers collaborate with clinicians and scientists to
increase our understanding of human disease and to develop novel
diagnostics and therapeutics. Projects are related to imaging devices
(CAT scan, MRI), drug delivery systems, prosthetic devices, and the
efficient management and use of large volumes of biological data. An
increasing appreciation of the central role engineers play in advancing
human health has led to significant growth in biomedical engineering.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the number of biomedical
engineering jobs will increase by at least 27 percent through 2014.
Ohio University offers an M.S. in biomedical engineering. The program is
offered by the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, in
conjunction with the Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Health and Human
Services, and Arts and Sciences, and the Edison Biotechnology Institute.
HOW TO APPLY:
The Interdisciplinary Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology has much
to offer students who wish to pursue advanced studies and research in
biochemistry and molecular and cellular biology.
Generally, it is recommended that students enter the program in the fall
quarter. Completed applications are to be received no later than
DECEMBER 30, 2009 for entrance in the following fall quarter.
Application forms can be downloaded or obtained from the address listed
below, Irvine Hall 109, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio 45701. However,
students are encouraged to apply online. Students are required to take
the GRE General Test. The Subject Test in biology; chemistry; or
biochemistry, cell and molecular biology is highly recommended. In the
case of international students, the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) is required.

2- Magíster en Ecología Marina - Universidad Católica de la Santísima
Concepción
CARACTERÍSTICAS:
El Magíster en Ecología Marina está dirigido a egresados del área
biológica (licenciatura o título profesional), interesados en la
ecología de los ambientes marinos costeros.
El Magíster es presencial, dura 4 semestres, y entre sus actividades
incluyes cursos básicos y optativos, cursos cortos, talleres,
conferencias, asistencia a congresos, y prácticas docentes.
Durante su estadía, los estudiantes focalizan su tiempo en:

Comprender la organización y funcionamiento de los ecosistemas marinos
*
Aprender los principales métodos y enfoques de estudio de la Ecología
*
Desarrollar investigación experimental y bibliográfica, y además
una tesis final.
El egresado adquiere así una base científica-práctica que lo capacita para:

Realizar investigación básica y aplicada en un espectro amplio de
situaciones

Realizar docencia y continuar estudios a nivel doctoral en el área
ecológica.
