-Departamento de Biodiversidad y Biología Experimental, Facultad de
Ciencias Exactas y Naturales, Universidad de Buenos Aires.
-Secretaria de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sustentable de la Nación.
OBJETIVOS GENERALES:
Contribuir al conocimiento, manejo y conservación de la biodiversidad de
la República Argentina, así como propiciar el intercambio de
experiencias, la integración de grupos de trabajo y la creación de
vínculos entre Instituciones de Investigación, Académicas,
Gubernamentales y no Gubernamentales.
OBJETIVOS ESPECÍFICOS:
* Promover el intercambio de nuevas experiencias, conocimientos
científico-técnicos y metodologías en la conservación de la
biodiversidad en la República Argentina.
* Evaluar y cuantificar el estado actual de la conservación de la
biodiversidad a escala nacional y los vacíos de información.
* Establecer prioridades para la conservación de la biodiversidad en la
República Argentina.
* Proponer políticas de manejo que orienten hacia un reposicionamiento
de la conservación de la biodiversidad en la agenda política nacional.
* Identificar y promover estrategias provinciales en concordancia con la
estrategia nacional y estrategias regionales.
* Elaborar "documentos finales", que reflejen las conclusiones sobre los
objetivos antedichos a fin de servir como base de de sugerencias y
recomendaciones a las autoridades competentes.

1- “Morfología, Taxonomía y Ecología de Diatomeas de Ambientes Acuáticos
Continentales”

TEMARIO DEL CURSO
1- Morfología de Diatomeas a nivel de Microscopía Óptica y Electrónica;
Características de las células vivas. Características generales del
frústulo y sus componentes. Morfología fina del frústulo
2- Clasificación: revisión de la evolución delos criterios de
clasificación de diatomeas. Niveles de análisis: microscopía electrónica
y nivel molecular. Presentación de las últimas propuestas clasificatorias.
3- Principales grupos de diatomeas: se realizará una revisión de los
principales géneros presentes en ambientes continentales.
4- Biogeografía de diatomeas: ¿los taxones infragenéricos de diatomeas
son cosmopolitas? Limitaciones en el uso de bibliografía de las regiones
templadas frías del globo para las regiones tropicales a subtropicales.
Diatomeas de América del Sur. Flora Tropical vs. Flora Andina.
5- El uso de las diatomeas como indicadores de calidad del agua.
Análisis de diferentes metodologías; no taxonómicas y taxonómicas.
Presentación de diferentes índeces diatómicos. Discusión sobre las
ventajas y limitaciones de estos métodos a ser aplicados en América del Sur.

2- Quantification of gene expression by qPCR

RESUMEN:
Quantification of gene expression is an increasingly important issue in
developmental, physiological and ecological molecular research.
Quantitative PCR (qPCR) is a fast, robust and straightforward method to
precisely measure mRNA expression levels that requires little material,
and thus also takes a center stage in quantitative biology, including
the validation of microarray results. This course will introduce into
the theory and practice of qPCR approaches, with a particular focus on
marine reference systems. Species include diatoms, polychaetes and sea
urchins.

Experimental design of RT-qPCR assay
Comparison of RT-qPCR approaches
Quantification strategies in RT-qPCR
Internal standards & troubleshooting
Data analysis and interpretation
Correlating microarray and RT-qPCR results

3- Plankton bloom dynamics - new insights from molecular and genomic tools

GENERALIDADES:
This summer course will address key issues for the molecular study of
plankton bloom dynamics, such as the physical and chemical factors
determining the development and decline of blooms, the diversity of the
organisms involved, the genes expressed and the subsequent changes in
the functioning of the pelagic ecosystem.
The course will be organized in a series of lectures and demonstrations
set up by prominent scientists working on the different aspects of bloom
ecology, from functional genomics to whole ecosystem integration. The
areas covered will be phytoplankton, harmful algal blooms, bacteria,
viruses and zooplankton.
NOTAS:
· The course fee is paid by the MGE Network for all academics (pre and
post doc). Lunches and coffees are included in the course fee as well as
the excursion (Saturday the 14th) and the farewell dinner (Thursday the
19th).
· All participants pay their own travel and accommodation.
· Participants are offered to be accommodated at the AWI guest house.
The costs for this is approx 150 € for the full period. There are only
14 beds. Additional options will be arranged.

4- Marine Evolutionary & Ecological Genomics

TEMAS
The course will consist of lectures, tutorials and computer based
exercises in the following subjects.
· Phylogeny - molecular evolution through sequences, phylogenetic
techniques (clustering, Bayesian statistics), molecular clock, case studies
· Population genetics - molecular evolution through allele frequencies,
population genetic techniques (structure, selection, gene flow,
bottlenecks, assignment), population dynamics, case studies
· Phylogeography - molecular evolution through networks,
phylogeographical techniques, coalescence, population dynamics, case
studies
· Environmental, functional and comparative genomics - 1. Genome
structure and architecture. 2. Markers in the genomics realm. 3. Methods
for detecting structure. 4. Introduction to functional genomics. 5. What
is environmental genomics? 5. Methods for detecting adaptive variation
(including selective sweeps) within and among populations; linking
hydrographical/environmental and demographic data to population
structure and local adaptation. 6 Quantitative genetics: evolution of
traits. 7. EST libraries: why and how. 8. Introduction to comparative
genomics (whole genome comparisons, concatenated phylogeny, genome
organization, annotating genomic information) 9. Case studies
· Phylogenomics - 1. What is comparative genomics? 2. Genomics and
genetics of speciation/ what makes a species from a genome point of
view? 3. Comparative marine genomics. 4. Case studies
NOTAS:
· The course fee is paid by the MGE Network for all academics (pre and
post doc). Lunches and coffees are included in the course fee as well as
the excursion (incl dinner) and farewell dinner.
· All participants pay their own accommodation and travel.
· Participants are offered to be accommodated at the SBR guesthouse
which is situated directly at the institute. The cost for this is €13
per night in double room incl. breakfast. The guesthouse can also offer
supper for a cost of €5.50 per person and meal.

5- Analysing Biodiversity & Life History Strategies

LUGAR: Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Science – Kristineberg, (Former

TEMAS
Diversity of meiofauna, phylogenomics, phylogeography of marine species,
DNA barcoding and modern taxonomy, marine life cycles and larval
diversity, reproductive systems in marine invertebrates, biodiversity
indices and marine communities
GENERALIDADES
The goal of the course is to introduce the participants to the diverse
marine fauna of the Swedish west coast and debate current topics in
biodiversity research and developmental biology. The course has a rather
broad focus and will concentrate on methods and applications in these
fields, while less emphasis will be placed on theoretical backgrounds.
Principally we will use the mornings for lectures given by experts in
the field and the afternoons for practical work such as software
exercises and wet labs. The course focuses almost exclusively on marine
invertebrate animals.
NOTAS:
· The course fee is paid by the MGE Network for all academics (pre and
post doc). Lunches and coffees are included in the course fee as well as
the excursion (Sunday the 20th) and the farewell dinner (Thursday the
24th).
· All participants pay their own travel and accommodation.
· Participants are offered (and encouraged as there are no real options
around) to be accommodated at the station. The costs for this is approx
70 € in single room and 60 € in double room per night including
breakfast and supper.
