4- Masters Programes: Environmental Monitoring for Management

LUGAR: Reino Unido

DESCRIPCIÓN:

A fundamental characteristic of the natural environment is its dynamic
nature. Environmental change, both natural and anthropogenic, impinges
on our daily lives and presents challenges that range from the local to
the global, and from the immediate to the long-term. Climate change,
coastal erosion, soil pollution, river flooding, ecosystem degradation;
these and many other dynamic environmental phenomena require increasing
attention from scientists, managers and planners in academia, government
and industry.

Understanding the processes that drive and control dynamic natural
systems is imperative for solving immediate problems and developing
truly sustainable management strategies for the twenty-first century and
beyond. As a necessary first step to obtain such understanding,
environmental changes need to be assessed through monitoring, analysis
and evaluation.

This MSc therefore focuses on the dynamic nature of biological and
physical environmental systems and teaches the practical and analytical
techniques that science, government and industry increasingly need to in
order to assess and manage dynamic environmental systems.

DIRIGIDO A:

Graduates wishing to improve their competitiveness for PhD places in
Environmental Science, Physical Geography or Ecology.

Graduates considering a career in any aspect of public or private sector
environmental consultancy, monitoring, planning and management.

5- MSc in Global Transformations

LUGAR: Reino Unido

DESCRIPCIÓN:

Globalization impinges on all our lives. Never before have our local
economies and communities been shaped so greatly by global change. If we
wish to understand the future of our ‘local’ world, whether for success
in business, work for local government or benefit for the community, it
makes sense to learn more about the processes of contemporary globalization.

The MSc in Global Transformations provides a comprehensive and critical
understanding of how globalization is transforming social, cultural and
political life. Inter-disciplinary in focus, the programme is designed
to help you gain expertise and skills in the processes that shape the
modern world. It provides a detailed and wide-ranging analysis of the
key features of contemporary economic, political, social and cultural
globalization.

The programme is taught by staff who are recognized as leading
international scholars in the study of globalization. The Globalization
and World Cities (GaWC) research network is based here and we also have
a reputation for research into the implications of globalization for the
'developing' world, citizenship and identity, global geopolitics and
other facets of globalization (see our research pages on economic and
social/political clusters). The research expertise of staff spans the
globe and includes experiences in regions as diverse as the Caribbean,
Central and Latin America, Western and Eastern Europe, Southern Africa,
Pacific Asia and the urban West.

DIRIGIDO A:

This programme is particularly relevant for students who wish to pursue
a career in such areas as:

- International Institutions: e.g. United Nations, European Union, etc

- Development Policy: e.g. National ministries, Research institutes

- Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs): e.g. Oxfam.

- International/National Journalism

- International Business

This programme has been designed for recent graduates in social science
disciplines, as well as business people, government and voluntary sector
employees, planners, teachers and local community representatives who
are interested in extending their knowledge and skills in globalization
studies.

MODULOS DELL PROGRAMA:

Globalization: key ideas and issues – explores how globalization has
been conceptualised and explored in geography and the social sciences.

Globalization, Difference and Diversity – which investigates the
multiple ways that economic, cultural, social and political difference
have been created and contested through the intersection of global and
local networks.

Practising Human Geography – which applies practical training skills to
research in global economic, political and social change.

Research Design – which provides extensive training in the design of
research projects.

Qualitative Methods and Analysis – which provides training in
contemporary social science research methods.

Dissertation – based on individually supervised personal research on the
topic of globalization.

Full and part-time

All the globalization Masters programmes can be taken on a full-time (12
months) or part-time (24 months) basis and involve a combination of
lectures, small-group classes, practical and project-based teaching and
learning. Distance learning methods are tailored to meet individual
participants’ needs.
