FORNI WINS FIRST BRIN PRIZE
Giovanni Forni (University of Maryland) was recently awarded the first
Michael Brin Prize in Dynamical Systems. Forni's research is on the
dynamics of rational polygonal billiards and of nilflows on higher step
nilmanifolds. The prize is endowed by Michael Brin of the University of
Maryland and carries with it a US$15,000 award. Subsequent prizes will
be awarded in the fall of odd-numbered years. More information about the
prize is at

awarding the 2007 Felix Klein Medal to Jeremy Kilpatrick (University of
Georgia) and the 2007 Hans Freudenthal Medal to Anna Sfard (University
of Haifa and University of London). Kilpatrick was recognized "for more
than forty years of sustained and distinguished lifetime achievement in
mathematics education research and development." Sfard was recognized
for "highly significant and scientifically deep accomplishments within a
consistent, long-term research programme focused on objectification and
discourse in mathematics education." The awards will be presented during
the opening ceremony at ICME-11 in Monterrey, Mexico on July 7, 2008. A
