                   SCHOOL AND WORKSHOP
"THE GEOMETRY AND TOPOLOGY OF SINGULARITIES"
             8 - 26 January  2007, Cuernavaca, Mexico

         In honor of the 60th Anniversary of Lê Dung Tráng


Singularity theory is a meeting point of various areas of mathematics,
and of science in general. New discoveries and striking developments
are happening day-to-day, both within singularity theory itself and in
its relations with other areas of mathematics. The purpose of this
meeting is to present some of the basic foundations of singularity
theory, as well as up-to-date material that brings us up to the
boundary of our present knowledge in various topics. Particular
emphasis will be given to the geometric and topological aspects of the
theory.

The School and Workshop will concern singularities in both complex and
real geometry. As such, it provides a natural continuat ion of
previous schools in singularities held at the ICTP, Trieste, Italy, in
1991 and more recently, in the summer of 2005.

LOCATION AND DATES:
The meeting will be held from 8 to 26 January 2007, in Cuernavaca,
Mexico, hosted by
the Cuernavaca Unit of the Instituto de Matemáticas of UNAM, where all
lectures will take place.

Cuernavaca is 70 km. south of Mexico City, and there is direct coach
service from Mexico City's airport to Cuernavaca. The ride takes about
90 minutes (see the webpage
www.matcuer.unam.mx for more information about transportation, climate
and so on).

The first week will consist of six elementary Lecture Courses. The
second week will consist
of four Lecture Courses, Invited Lectures (50 minutes) and Short
Invited Lectures (40 minutes). The third week will consist of a
Lecture Course delivered by Professor Heisuke Hironaka and Invited
Lectures.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT:
Participants from all over the world are most welcome to attend the
meeting. As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the
participants are borne by their home institutions.
However, we are happy to say that limited funds are available for some
applicants from
Latin America (included Mexico), the Caribbean and the USA, to be
selected by the organizers. This is thanks to the support from the
ICTP (Italy), CNPq (Brazil), and the MSRI and Clay Mathematics
Institute from USA. Such financial support is available only to those
attending the entire activity. In some exceptional cases applicants
from other countries may receive partial support.

As scarcity of funds allows travel to be granted only in a few
exceptional cases, every
effort should be made by candidates to secure support for their fare
(or at least half-fare) from their home country.

a) For participants from Latin America and the Caribbean:
This School and Workshop is part of a program organized and supported
by the Abdus Salam ICTP, from Trieste, Italy, and the Conselho
Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico
e Tecnológico (CNPq) of Brazil. The main purpose of this program is to
enhance scientific research in Latin America and the Caribbean, and
therefore supports researchers from countries in that region.

The closing date for the receipt of requests for finnancial support is
November 10, 2006. Candidates should complete the electronic
Application Form through the web page below, which will be available
from this server by the end of September.

b) For USA participants:
As mentioned before, limited funds are available for USA participants,
thanks to the support of the MSRI and the Clay Mathematics Institute.
Information on this subject will be provided later through the web
page and in later announcements.

REGISTRATION AND INFORMATION:
The registration fee is $100 USD ($50 USD for students), or the
equivalent in Mexican pesos, payable in cash upon arrival. This
includes the welcome packet, with local information, and free coffee
during the meeting. There will be also social activities, to be
described later, and the registration for these will be independent.
